It is a great pleasure and honor to be at this prestigious Center, which has been for decades connected with several leading experts in the field of the so called „sovietology“. I will try to use this opportunity for making a few comments about our way of looking at both the past and the present times.

It is a pleasure and honor to be here and to have the opportunity to tell you about how I see my country, NATO and European Union. The Czech Republic has been in the past eight years undergoing the most rapid political, social and economic transformation and despite all existing and inevitable problems and difficulties has achieved the position where we can - with sufficient confidence - apply for membership both in the European Union and NATO.

I am extremely pleased and really honored by being awarded the Honorary Doctorate Degree at your University. I am aware of the distinguished list of predecessors who have achieved this recognition and I thank you for including me in this group.

I have in my hands at least three explicit invitations to make a speech at Stanford - one from Anne Krueger, one from Michael Boskin and one from Kurt Leube. In my interpretation, the first one is about the experiences of a politician with academic background, the second is about economic and economic policy issues in a transforming country and the third about free society and its enemies.

It is a great pleasure to be here after seven years, to have the chance to meet old friends and to report both about non-negligible and undeniable positive results which have been achieved in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe between my two visits to Jackson Hole, and about not less undeniable problems connected with such a unique historical manouvre.
