English Pages, 3. 10. 2009

Prague, 3 October 2009

Dear Professor Buchanan,

I would like to congratulate you on the occasion of your 90th birthday and wish you sound health and much happiness.

This significant jubilee is a suitable occasion to recognize your enormous achievements and your great academic work. I am sure it has been done in many places of the world. I appreciate you not only as a great scholar of liberty, who contributed to the revival of classical thinking, but also as a social scientist in the broadest sense of the term. Your work goes beyond the strict borders of standard economic theory and opens new perspectives to all of us. I can confirm that you are an inspiration for all those who want to understand the role of government in today's world from all points of view.

That is why I decided to award you a golden medal of the President of the Czech Republic. It is a personal award, which I dedicate to eminent personalities who have made a remarkable contribution in their field and whose work is known and respected all over the world. All these characteristics match your life perfectly.

Once again, I wish you happy birthday.

Sincerely,

Václav Klaus
